4 EASY WAYS TO COOL YOUR HOME

By Siobhan Hawken

January is one of the hottest months of the year and without taking some time to cool down your property it can get oppressive. If you’re feeling the heat this January, here are four projects you can do around the home that will pay dividends this year and in the years to come.

Install an awning

A good way to keep the sun out and cool the house is to install awnings. The good news is that today’s advancements mean that awnings can cover a larger area without unsightly additional support. The sun won’t enter your home and you’ll be able to enjoy your patio even on the hottest days.

Install shutters

Heavy curtains keep sunlight from entering the home, helping to keep in the cooler air during summer. In winter, they can also help you to keep the warmth in. And for those of you who prefer to have a sleep-in at the weekend, heavy curtains will also prevent light from entering your room.

If you would like the best of both worlds, it might be worth investing in shutters as the perfect solution. You can adjust shutters to allow some light to enter the home, and it will also prevent the home from overheating.

Install ceiling fans

Air conditioning is effective but it can be expensive and is not the most environmentally friendly solution. Instead, you could try out some ceiling fans to keep you cool without the high cost of air con. Contemporary ceiling fans look good and are a great way to keep cool in the summer.

Install a vertical garden

A lovely green way of keeping your home cooler is to use a bit of clever landscaping. For example, walls that face the sun get very hot and the heat passes through the walls and into your home. One ingenious way to cool down your walls is to install a vertical garden near or against a wall that faces the sun.
