Designating a space in a luxury home to prepare to conquer the world makes getting ready more enjoyable and glamorous. In fact, a dressing room can seriously elevate the art of personal presentation, as well as add the “it” factor to a designer home.

At the top-tier end of the market, “dressing room” really translates to “glam room”, says Aaron Wong, founder of Alexander Pollock Interior Design in Melbourne.

Such a space is now an essential in conjunction with a main-bedroom suite or wing, he says, and Matt Gates, director of Ray White Sanctuary Cove, agrees.

“Dressing rooms have become a bit of an expectation among affluent buyers,” Gates says. “Obviously these clients are very fashion-conscious and have a generous wardrobe.”

While Gates has seen homes with customised dressing rooms for men and women, Wong says that, typically, glam rooms are designed for female occupants.

With this in mind, whimsical or ultra-feminine additions, such as a translucent chair draped with plush Mongolian fur, can distinguish the space.

The chair could be placed in front of a mirror-finish marble vanity table, while the addition of an antique-stained mirror could create an old-world feel.

Adding a wall sconce that emits a filtered, warm-white light is ideal for adding a flattering glow in which to complete styling, Wong says.

Glam rooms can also include velvet-lined drawers for jewellery, customised storage for cosmetics and a special display for a trophy collection.

Media personality Khloe Kardashian has an entire wall of hair extensions while her mother Kris Jenner’s dressing room is designed to show off her sizeable collection of Birkin handbags.

For those who prefer to highlight their Louboutins or Manolo Blahniks, or simply to streamline shoe selection, Wong favours a display similar to a shop, with elegant shelving illuminated by LED strip lighting.

For wardrobes, lighting built into customised joinery makes it easier to select the perfect outfit, he says.

“For a luxe floor, my personal choice is European oak, although some clients prefer a lush, wall-to-wall carpet.”

Gates says that while women may have displays of handbags or shoes, men are most likely to have one of highly collectible watches.
