Get wired: IT workshops at Carnegie library

By Matt Hurlston

Most of you know that you can get out books there – both the paper and electronic kind – but what you may not know is that Glen Eira libraries also offer IT workshops for both iPads and iPods.

All workshops are held in the tech room of Carnegie library, and they're free!

All you need to do is book, either online, by calling or in person at any Glen Eira library. Bookings open up four weeks before the event date.

These events are popular, and due to limited numbers, booking is definitely required.

In fact, "Getting started with iPads" was completely booked out for their August sessions (the next ones are on 10 and 17 September).

"Getting started with iPads" is a two-day workshop, with attendance being compulsory for both sessions. The first session teaches students how to use the touch screen keyboard, browse the internet, surf websites and connect to Wi-Fi. The second session extends participants' skills by showing other methods for inputting text, and how to email.

Other workshops they run are:

  • "iPhone Basics", where they teach you what they don't show you at the store
  • "Photos on your iPad", where you learn to take photos and videos, then edit them, all on your iPad
  • "Online shopping", where they take your through all the steps of completing an online purchase
  • "Streaming and catch-up TV", where streaming TV online is covered

Not only do they run programmes for learning how to use your digital devices, but all Glen Eira libraries have free Wi-Fi and access to internet through their collective 35 computers.

Programmes like these make Carnegie and Bentleigh great places to live. If you're interested in buying real estate in Carnegie or Bentleigh so that you can become a part of this great community, give Matt Hurlston a call.
