How to keep your pets safe over Christmas

By Matt Hurlston

According to the Australian Companion Animal Council, more than 63 per cent of households across the nation have some type of pet. This means a lot of Carnegie properties are probably prone to howling and meowing! Breaking this group down a little further, you can see exactly what kind of domestic friends we have taken to:

  • 40 per cent of households have a dog
  • 26 per cent have taken on a feline friend
  • 53 per cent have acquired a dog and/or a cat

So we’ve got quite a few furry companions around the house. But when it comes to the Christmas season, conditions can be a bit, shall we say, cagey for our pets. Decorations and celebrations can be dangerous for animals that are easily amused and excited. With this in mind, the Glen Eira City Council has issued a few guidelines for keeping pets safe over the summer break.

Keep the pets relaxed in Carnegie real estate

Fireworks and loud parties can be a bit unnerving for cats and dogs. The local council recommends taking them out for a walk beforehand, as it can relax them quite a bit – or wear them out so much they fall asleep! Additionally, keeping them secure in a locked room or outdoor area is a good idea, so they don’t get spooked and decide to run away.

But don’t forget to keep them plied with snacks! A hungry pet isn’t always a happy one – a full bowl can see them occupied for hours.

Finally, make sure your dog or cat can’t wreck your decorations. Shiny objects and loose-hanging tinsel might soon become chewable toys in the eyes of your pet, so keep them out of the way of the tree and your stockings for a saliva-free silly season.

Carnegie real estate lights up over Christmas time – make sure your pets and your hard work don’t suffer because of it!
