Latest university rankings put Melbourne at the top

By Anqi Wang

If you need another reason to move to Melbourne, you might be interested to know the city is home to Australia’s highest-ranked university.

In addition to being an excellent tertiary education facility, the University of Melbourne has had a strong showing in the recent Academic Ranking of World Universities ARWU).

A win for the education state

Conducted by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the ARWU is an annual report which reveals the world’s top universities. According to the firm, the ranking is decided by a combination of transparent methodology and third-party data.

Some of the objective ranking factors include articles published in journals such as Nature and Science, as well as citations by Thomson Reuters and number of Fields Medal and Nobel Prize winners. Out of over 1,200 universities from around the globe, only the top 500 make it on the published AWRU list.

The number one spot for 2016 went to Harvard University, with the University of Melbourne coming in at 40th – the highest ranking for any Australian university. However, the state of Victoria had more to celebrate on the AWRU thanks to Monash University receiving a ranking of 79th in the world, just after the Australian National University.

“These ratings cement Victoria as a true leader in global education, with two of the six Australian universities in the top 100 – more than any other state,” Minister for International Education Steve Herbert said.

“The University of Melbourne should be congratulated on its achievement. This is also the first time Monash University has cracked the top 100, and to come in at 79 is no mean feat.”

Victoria has two universities in the AWRU top 500.

Investing in education

According to the University of Melbourne, securing an Australian presence amongst the world’s top universities has been a ‘continuous strategic focus’ for the tertiary institute.

“This result is a testament to the dedicated work by our researchers and staff,” Vice Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis explained.

“It is imperative that Australia has a strong foothold among the world’s greatest universities and our continuous focus is on ensuring we provide excellence in education and support pioneering world leading research.”

As a nation, Australia has 23 educational institutions in the AWRU, marking an increase from 2015. If you’re searching for your next home, why not consider real estate in real estate in Bentleigh?
