Litter-free title awarded to Victoria in 2014

By Matt Hurlston

Creating a cleaner, greener Victoria is important for the future of the state. There have been a number of initiatives enacted to help residents achieve these ends, with the efforts beginning to pay off. Victoria was recently named Australia's most litter-free state, recording the lowest amount nationwide since reporting began back in 2005.

This could be great news for residents of Carnegie real estate and those committed to a more sustainable lifestyle in the state. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the new record for Victoria was 28 items per 1,000 square metres, as opposed to 30 items last year.

"That is well below this year's national average of 51 items per 1,000 square metres. These very pleasing results confirm that the Napthine government's litter strategy and recycling programs are delivering real and tangible benefits to our environment and the Victorian community," said Mr Smith in a 25 August statement.

Across the state, the government has invested over $6 million into litter prevention measures and programs, including the installation of more than 1,000 new recycling bins throughout the region.
