Lush and Leafy in Carnegie: New Council Strategy

By Matt Hurlston

A new council strategy has recognised that residents of real estate in Carnegie and surrounding suburbs appreciate having plenty of trees in nearby open spaces.

The City of Glen Eira adopted its Open Space Strategy just last week and it will oversee open spaces well into the future – as far as 2026, according to a March 19 media release.

Carnegie residents favour trees

"The Strategy will direct future planning, provision, design and management of open space in Glen Eira," noted the release.

Trees were found to be the "most highly valued feature" of the council's current open space after a thorough community consultation period.

The strategy places focus on increasing the number of trees in the council's area as well as their continued maintenance.

"The Strategy also makes recommendations on how to improve environmental sustainability, including the investigation of opportunities to integrate sustainable water use," explained Glen Eira Mayor Neil Pilling last month.

Some gaps have been identified in the current open space network, but council is committed to rectifying this. For instance, some community members feel they don't have easy access to open space.

While families, couples and seniors living in property in Carnegie have access to R M Lord Park, Mallanbool Reserve and J T Packer Park, it's certainly a good move on behalf of the council to make the Glen Eira area even better than it currently is.
