Ray White Carnegie’s Matt Hurlston: Melbourne becomes more diverse following citizenship ceremony

By Matt Hurlston

Owners of Bentleigh real estate could be interested to know that Melbourne's diverse multicultural society just got a little bigger, following an Australia Day citizenship ceremony at the city's town hall. At the ceremony, 105 new residents from 31 nations were given their citizenship and recognised as members of the nation.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said residents came from places like Brazil, Greece, Sweden, Vietnam, South Korea, New Zealand, Malaysia, India, Ethiopia and Colombia, and highlighted their contributions to making the city as liveable and prosperous as it is today.

"Melbourne is the fastest growing municipality in Australia and home to people from more than 230 countries who speak 220 languages and follow 105 faiths," said Mr Doyle in a 26 January statement.

"Australia Day is a time when we catch up with family and friends. We remember where we have come from, why we embrace our cultural diversity and celebrate the importance of community."
