Ray White Carnegie’s Matt Hurlston: New home construction rates reach record high

By Matt Hurlston

Anyone considering the construction of their own property in Bentleigh East over the coming months could be interested to hear about the state of the nation's building industry. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) highlighted that dwelling starts are rising to record highs – with nearly 190,000 dwellings expected to be started during 2014.

This is an increase up from the previous record of 187,000 back in 1994, and highlights the strength of the developing real estate markets throughout Australia. HIA chief economist Harley Dale said this momentum has been building steadily over the last year as a number of economic factors have aligned over the period.

"Record low borrowing costs have combined with other factors such as high net overseas migration to unleash substantial pent-up demand for new housing. These factors will keep the level of new homes commenced at historically elevated levels," said Mr Dale in a 23 November statement.
