Ray White Carnegie’s Matt Hurlston: Recycling bins on Glen Eira streets offer recycling incentive

By Matt Hurlston

The Glen Eira Council's plan to sort through the streets rubbish bins and separate the recyclables has seen a growth in recycling across the area. This reflects the growing environmentalism in real estate in Bentleigh East, making it possible for neighbourhoods to become more sustainable even when residents aren't home.

Glen Eira mayor Jim Magee said that between July and November 2014, a huge 51 per cent of the contents from the street rubbish bins were recycled. Rather than creating separate recycling bins – which people might not use – it was better to simply send all the rubbish to be organised and sorted.

"As a result, recycling rates have increased and the number of collection trucks required has decreased," said Mayor Magee in a 22 December statement.

The council aims to put up signs detailing these new methods, giving people more information about how their rubbish is being sorted and disposed of.
