Ray White Carnegie’s Matt Hurlston: Victorians more likely to upsize their properties

By Matt Hurlston

A new release from Slater and Gordon Lawyers has highlighted the growing rate of people citing upsizing their homes as the reason for selling, which could be encouraging for anyone hoping to secure a bigger Bentleigh property in the near future.

Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 30 per cent had sold property in the last 10 years. Thirty per cent of those respondents cited upsizing as the reason behind their decision. Furthermore, Victorian sellers alone saw 31 per cent claim a larger home as the rational behind their choice.

Slater and Gordon Lawyer Robert Kern said the research highlighted lifestyle and emotional factors were still a major part of people's decisions to buy or sell property nationwide, regardless of the tightening market and rising population figures.

"People are probably less likely now to stay in the same home their whole life and are more willing to buy and sell until they are in a property that ticks all the boxes in terms of what they want – and that includes a property of a certain size," said Mr Kern in a 17 March statement.
