Victorian Government Didn’t Consult One Key Group On New Council Housing Targets: Buyers

Sandeep Singh Chauhan and his wife Aakanksha Sharma are just about to move into a new home in the Casey council area on Melbourne’s fringe.

Along with kids Serena, 6, Veer, 4, and their German shepherd Leo, 5 months, they’re among the more than 4000 families to have had a new residence approved in the municipality so far this financial year.

Almost perfectly in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD, the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland, Mr Chauhan said their four-bedroom future home was in a convenient location for them.

And they’re adamant they would have never considered an apartment, despite government hopes to boost the numbers of Victorians living in higher density properties by 2051.

“We couldn’t live in an apartment … we never fancied that idea,” Mr Chauhan said.

“And a few months ago we got a dog, a german shepherd, and he will need at least a small backyard.”

With Melbourne’s notoriously fickle weather, he said it was important for a family to have plenty of “breathing space” — especially in the post-Covid era.

They’re looking forward to the soon-to-be completed Metricon build offering them enough space to enjoy when it’s warm or cold.

Mr Chauhan added that they had also been concerned about building a new home amid regular reports of builders becoming insolvent, but the reputation and size of their builder Metricon had given them confidence.

He said even if they were comfortable with living in a unit, many buyers might still opt to build a new house in the short term as they saw greater security in having a block of land.

Metricon sales and marketing general manager Drew Glascott added that Casey had become a “standout region” in Victoria thanks to local government reforms and initiatives to accelerate planning approval processes — helping prospective home builders get into their new residence faster.
