We’ve always known how popular Melbourne is with buyers of real estate in Bentleigh, but now the latest population figures have confirmed our suspicions!
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that during 2014-15, the city’s population expanded by 2.1 per cent. Although this marks a slight fall of 0.1 per cent from the previous year, it nevertheless exceeds every other national capital. Darwin was the next-highest performer with a 1.9 per cent increase in population growth.
“Although Perth’s growth slowed to its lowest rate since 2004-05, it was not the only city to experience weaker growth,” explained director of demography at the ABS, Beidar Cho.
“Of all the capitals, only Hobart (0.8 per cent), Canberra (1.4 per cent) and Darwin (1.9 per cent) grew faster in 2014-15 than in the previous year.”
Further ABS figures show there’s also been a rise in the number of Australians who were born overseas. More than a quarter (28 per cent) of the national population was born outside of this country, after figures have increased annually for the past 15 years.
People from the UK currently make up 5.1 per cent of the Australian population, followed by New Zealand and China on 2.6 per cent and two per cent respectively. There’s also been a significant increase in the number of people who were born in India moving to these shores, with figures almost tripling over the past decade.
