If you’re a fan of charming neighbourhoods lined with greenery and trees, you’re in luck. Oakleigh is a south eastern Melbourne suburb with a range of offerings for families, students and young professionals. As shown by the 2011 Census, Oakleigh had a population of 7,535 and 2,915 privately-owned homes, with the majority of them being separate houses.
If you’re without a car or prefer to not to drive, Oakleigh is a suburb designed for people like you. Walk Score, a database that analyses the walkability of suburbs, has given Oakleigh a rating of 73, making it ‘very walkable’. This means there are plenty of things you can see and do in the area on foot, including scores of characterful cafes, retailers, stores, recreational areas and more.
Need to make a longer commute somewhere? The great availability of public transport has got you covered. Oakleigh and Huntingdale station are the two train stops in the suburb, located on the far east and west side of the region.
If you want to get a breath of fresh air, head down to one of the nearby spaces like Caloola Reserve or Brickmakers Park. To get a taste of the local sporting community, try checking out the Warrawee Park Oval and watch a game of club footy or cricket. Alternatively, wander on to the Jack Edwards Reserve to spectate an exciting match of soccer.
Itching to break a sweat yourself? The Oakleigh Recreation Centre is just around the corner, and offers a wide range of facilities and programmes that will definitely get your blood pumping. The centre has a gym and health centre, complete with personal trainers and massage services. If you’d rather get involved in a team sport, there are fustal, netball and basketball competitions available.
Those after a swim can come by and clock some laps. From 1 November to 31 March every year, the recreational centre opens up its 50m lap, dive and multipurpose pools.
Don’t worry if you have young ones to take care of – just leave them with the creche inside the centre. If they fancy a splash themselves, let them have the time of their lives at the toddler pool.
